The Public Bucket List: Top-Tier Golf You Can Actually Play
You don't need a private membership to play some of the best golf in the world. Here are the top public-access courses every golfer should book.

"Private" is overrated. Some of the world's best layouts are public. Pebble Beach, Bandon, Bethpage Black, Whistling Straits. If you'll never get a Cypress Point invite, the public bucket list has more than enough.
The unforgettable five
- Pebble Beach Golf Links: the most photographed coastline in golf. Open since 1919.
- Pinehurst No. 2: Ross's Sandhills original, three-time U.S. Open host.
- Bandon Dunes Resort: the Oregon coast remade by Mike Keiser. Stay all week and play all five courses.
- Bethpage Black: A.W. Tillinghast's brutalist masterpiece. Two U.S. Opens, two PGAs. The "warning sign" is real.
- Whistling Straits: Pete Dye's Wisconsin links-mimicry on Lake Michigan. 2020 Ryder Cup site.
Beyond the obvious
The full public bucket list lives at /lists/best-public and includes:
- Streamsong Resort (Red, Blue, Black) in Florida
- Kingsbarns in Scotland
- Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand
- Cabot Cliffs in Nova Scotia
- Royal County Down in Northern Ireland
Log them as you play them. Build out the diary, share the list with friends, and rate honestly. The data only gets useful when reviews are real.
